The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is Kenya’s new healthcare scheme that replaced the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which had been operational since 1966. SHIF is designed to offer universal healthcare coverage and is mainly financed by employee contributions.
The SHIF officially started on July 1, 2024, and offers new healthcare benefits, including funds for emergencies and chronic illnesses. This post will guide you through the process of registering for SHIF.
Registration Methods
You can register for SHIF through three main methods:

Online Registration
- Visit the official SHIF registration website at www.sha.go.ke.
- Follow the instructions provided to complete the registration process.
Assisted Registration
- You can visit any designated National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) office or any other official registration point authorized by the Social Health Authority (SHA).
- Community health promoters will be available to assist you with the registration process.
Required Information for Registration
When registering, you’ll need to provide the following personal details:
- Full name
- Occupation
- Date of birth
- Marital status
- KRA PIN (Kenya Revenue Authority Personal Identification Number)
- Contact details (address and phone number)
Important Dates and Transition
- The new benefits under SHIF will be available starting October 1, 2024.
- Until then, existing contracts with healthcare providers will continue, ensuring a smooth transition from NHIF to SHIF.
